If Money Didn't Matter, Here's What I'd Do

A Speak Your Mind essay

Yes, money DOES change everything.

My husband has a whole list of things he'll do if he wins the lottery. I don't have a list of my own, since he's the one who buys the tickets, but if we did strike it rich one day, I would definitely change a few things.

Finances have always ranked fairly high among my reasons for working, but even if they weren't an issue anymore, I would still work. My skills and experience as an accountant and manager will always be valuable and transferable, but I might apply them in a business of my own as opposed to the nonprofit agency where I work now. In any case, I would happily say goodbye to my 60-mile round-trip Southern California commute and do something closer to home. I'm not sure what that would be, but I think there could be a niche in serving busy parents, workers, and caretakers by offering a service to handle errands and running around for them, so they could get more time for themselves and their families. If money was really not a concern and work wasn't full-time, I would also like to work with socializing and training puppies to become assistance dogs, which my whole family could get involved in - my stepdaughter's career dreams at this point all include working with animals.

I'd also spend more time writing and reading, and encourage my husband to get his photography business going - I could do his bookkeeping, too.
