Money: It's an object, but, I'll pretend it's not

A Speak Your Mind essay

If money was not an issue, would you work and what would you do?

I have to work. I'm married to a teacher, and, I'm the primary breadwinner. I could wax philosophical about what we pay our teachers, but, I'll spare you. This time.

Working is simply my reality, and, that's OK.

If money weren't an object, I'd still work, it's just what I do, but, you can be sure that I'd be first in line to apply for something fun. Not that you can't have fun in any job, I'd look for something where my primary concern didn't have to be pay and benefits.

Truthfully, I'd like to be able to say that I have one meaningful passion that I'd pursue if I could. But, actually, I would love to be able to do whatever strikes my fancy without any repercussions of how it would look on a resume, and, if it allowed me to do it while the kids were in school.

Maybe I'd blog full time for a while, then move onto working at my neighborhood Starbuck's until something else got my attention. I've always been one to get something in my head that I'd like to try, and, then I'm satisfied after I try it out.

I'm not sure what my "ideal" job would be, but, I'm thinking something along the lines of going out to lunch and shopping on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and, Thursdays from 10-2 with full-time pay, of course.

May I send you a resume?

  • I'd probably always work, but having the flexibility to do something that I love would be nice. My job pays the bills (and has definite pluses), but it's not my dream job.

  • Dending on which day you ask me, my answere would generally be that I would continue to work if money was not an issue. I have my days were I think that I would love to just give it all up but I know in my heart I would miss the work.

  • If money was not an issue, I'd work full time on my books. That would give me flexibility with my family. I'd miss my present employer. I work for a charity and I like to help people. I had big dreams when I earned my MBA which I'm only now starting to fulfill. Choices choices. It's not easy.
