Jazz up a traditional grilled cheese sandwich by adding bold flavors. Smoked salmon and lemon are the perfect additions to this sandwich. These ingredients are melted between two pieces of buttery and crispy bread.
½ lemon, thinly sliced, seeded
½ tsp. salt
8 slices of French bread
4 oz. smoked salmon
4 oz. Gruyere or American cheese, sliced or shredded
½ tsp. crushed red pepper
In a small saucepan, bring 1 C. of water to a boil. Add salt and lemons, layering them down flat in the pan. Boil until the water is almost all gone until there is a thin syrup left. Do not stir and remove from heat.
Heat a large cast iron pan on medium-high heat. Meanwhile, lay out 4 slices of bread. Add smoked salmon, cheese and crushed red pepper on top. Fork out lemon slice and place one on each sandwich. Top with a second layer of bread. Butter each side with butter and place in a pan once it is hot.
