I am sure all of you parents have experienced this. You have just gotten the entire family ready and you're running a few minutes behind. You grab your keys, cell phone, diaper bag, baby, and anything else you may need for this 20 minute excursion. You shut and lock the front door, get the kids in the car, strap the baby into the car seat and check everyone's seatbelts, when..."Uh oh, what's that smell?!" Time to unstrap the baby and lug him into the house for a diaper change while the other kids sit in the car and the minutes tick away, making you extremely late.
Now relate that scene to your career. You graduate from college, begin your career, get married - everything is moving along nicely when along comes baby. Of course this is a beautiful time and you are overjoyed about impending motherhood, but you were just getting somewhere, just walking out the door so to speak. Once you get your life on track after the first baby, along comes the second, and the third; you never seem able to get out the door with a clean diaper.
Even though things are harder with children, it is possible to still be successful while being a mom. I have had four children, two marriages, and four careers (this is not including the eight jobs that were not career builders). I have had many do-overs and each time I resented taking three steps back toward the beginning. But in retrospect, look at how much stronger, wiser, and wittier I have become. Without my experiences I would not be at this point in my life, so much closer to having it "all figured out".
I know that we can do it! We can have it all, careers, family, fun! Now if I could just find time to eat breakfast...
