garbagebags.jpgThis past weekend I went gangbusters on our kitchen cupboards. My “baking” cupboard, stacked high with Tupperware full of white flour, white sugar, shortening, chocolate chips, and white pasta all went to the great trash bin in the sky. (Actually behind the shed, but who’s asking?)

We haven’t eaten any of that junk in months and my former lover, baking, has recently been quick and easy with Organic Muffin Mix - plop an egg, 2 tablespoons of oil and a cup of water into the ready made mix and you have healthy muffins in 16 minutes. I’d much rather be running my own motor than that of the mixer anyway.

Once upon a time, I would have felt guilty about throwing out so much food. Yesterday, I felt liberated by getting rid of foods that would only work against me. What I found was that once everything bad was gone, I had 2 entire cupboards leftover and a bunch of Tupperware that could be used for healthier alternatives like whole wheat flour, whole grain brown rice, couscous and lentils.

These new foods in my regime have changed the size of my waist (4 inches off my waist now, 9 inches off my entire body!), have made me into a powerhouse and in the long run, will save us money on prescription drugs by keeping my family healthy.

Aside from a cold about a week ago, the entire family made it through the winter without so much as a sniffle! Tell me that isn’t evidence!

Take a look in your cupboards. What foods could you pitch that would achieve those same goals? Are you a cookie monster? Is your secret passion a love affair with crackers and Cheeze Whiz? Do you long to mix up pudding and pour it down your throat? Do you grab a handful of chocolate chips when having a PMS Sybil moment?

Your challenge this week is to purge your cupboards of foods that are keeping you from your goals. It only took me a few minutes to get things thrown out, (which got me into an hour-long clean out of all the cupboards, but mine needed it and yours probably do too!)

    I’m curious how you got the rest of your family on board with this massive purging.

    My husband would flip his lid if I got rid of all the “junk” in my house.

    My husband was already a healthy eater - but when I joined the gym, he went hard core. He reads a ton and we shop the perimeter of the grocery store - produce, meat, a bit of dairy and whole grains. He has never liked anything from a box, or sweet things, so I guess I’m lucky in that regard. If he liked junk, I might have a bigger challenge.
    As for the kids? We’ve never given them soda and they occasionally get ice cream, frozen yogurt, potato chips and even candy - but it’s maybe once a month. They reach for bananas, strawberries and apples willingly.

    Rock on, Karen! That is awesome - and as always these days with you, inspiring. I’m feeling all about purging the house now that it’s spring so this fits in perfectly. When I’ve got one kid to school and the other sleeping, I know exactly where I’m going to purge in the kitchen. Chips & cookies. OLD chips and GROSS cookies. Last week I made an impulse buy of strawberry oreos. I remember oreos tasting so good when I was a kid. For years now, though, I’ve been eating Newman’s Os so that’s what tastes good to me, and the oreos taste like the chemicals they’re made out of. But I couldn’t help myself ’cause I’d never seen them with strawberry filling. And they taste like crap but I was seriously thinking about keeping them and eating them just so I would waste food. NOT a good idea! Those will be the first to see the inside of the garbage bin in a couple hours. Thanks again for the inspiration! :o)

    Uh, I meant to say, I was thinking of keeping the strawberry oreos so I would *not* waste food. Duh.

    I also forgot to say that you are SO LUCKY to have a healthy-leaning husband. Every bit of work I do, mental or physical, toward being healthier, I do alone. I want to be a good example for my kids - especially because my husband makes such bad food choices, does not exercise, and is younger than me but falling apart physically. But it is HARD being the only responsible one in the house, having to do it all with complete indifference and little support (my husband doesn’t like my cooking because it’s too healthy - not enough fat, no meat) from one’s spouse. He’s not mean about it and he doesn’t complain about my cooking in front of the kids, but since he has no interest in trying new things and eating healthy, it sort of feels like he’s working against me sometimes. I can only imagine how great it would be to have the kind of support and interest you do from your hubs, you lucky duck!

    There´s not a lot in my cupboards right now, I´m afraid, so no need to toss anything. Since my son has problems with his intestines due to a birth defect, we have a pretty healthy diet. He can´t have things like pasta or much sugar, so it really forces us to keep healthy food in the house.
