As an entrepreneur, you’ve undoubtedly heard the expression “wearing a lot of hats.” You aren’t only the company’s founder and probably the president and/or CEO, but you are also often the CFO, the COO, the head of marketing, you name it. As your business grows, you may begin outsourcing some of those duties so you can wear the hat that fits you best. Or you might begin hiring people to work within your company or yourself.
Then there are the hats that you can’t delegate as easily. Mom, for example, or Wife. Yeah, those aren’t hats you can just pass off even if it would free you up to spend more time on your company.
So what are your hats and how are you wearing them? Which ones have you passed on for someone else to wear? And which ones should you be passing on but haven’t gotten around to it yet? Here’s a look at my hat inventory.
President - Yes, I’m president of my company, a corporation, and have all the duties that go along with that role. Since I’m currently the sole full-time employee of the corporation, I’m not really able to delegate that particular role to anyone else.
Consultant - As an employee of my corporation, I provide consulting duties. Can’t delegate those because that is what my clients are paying for - my expertise.
Writer/Blogger - This is my favorite part of what I do - writing. While I don’t want to delegate most of my writing, I do have some projects where my client is hiring a team that I put together and that could include a writer and an editor other than me.
Speaker/Teacher - Hard to delegate my speaking engagements when they are hiring me to make the appearance.
E- and Social Media Marketer - This is the area where I really need to delegate more and includes creating social networking pages for clients, marketing their presence online, Second Life marketing, etc. To delegate some of these duties, I need to either identify someone who already has a familiarity with these services and then train them on how to use them for marketing purposes or to train someone from scratch. Either way, it requires not only my time but also being able to articulate what I do, how I do it, why I do it and then trust that someone else will have the same dedication to quality and detail that I have. This part is terrifying to me, but this is also the most logical place to bring in some help.
Marketer - This area is much easier for me to delegate. I’ve already hired a Web developer to redesign my Web site which should be up soon. This is the first time I have ever hired an outside developer to design my personal/professional Web site. And she has designed new business cards for me as well and will take care of getting them printed. What a relief! I’m also saving to hire another consultant to do PR for me once my next book comes out. These are things that I know how to do but clearly there is not enough time in the day to do them. Hiring trusted colleagues who have their own businesses to take over these tasks is a no brainer for me - just designating the funds to do so takes effort.
Mother - Okay, I’m not really saying I can delegate motherhood although there are times that I really wish I could. But by bringing my almost 2-year-old daughter to daycare, I am passing off some of the “watching her during the day” duties onto responsible people and feel comfortable with that, particularly because she gets social time with other kids her age. Also, making sure I have at least two babysitters who I can call when I need them is helpful and not just for date night with my husband. I’m also bringing back our old babysitter to come by Friday mornings so I can leave the house early and attend a businesswomen’s networking breakfast every week. The babysitter will feed and dress our daughter and take her to school Friday mornings. I get to spend time with a much needed support network of entrepreneurial women.
Wife - Hmmmm…not going to delegate this one.
Where is the rest of me, I wonder, as I look at all these hats. Like the Solo RVer hat? The Karaoke Addict hat? The Conference Attendee hat? The Dance Class Taker hat? Those are the hats that I seem to have tucked away in some attic somewhere, and I really want to pull them out, dust them off, and wear them again. Unfortunately, it seems as if I would have to give up another hat or partial hat to have these, too.
Back to the hat closet for closer analysis. Maybe I need a Hat Stylist.
What are your hats and how are you wearing them? Which ones have you passed on for someone else to wear? And which ones should you be passing on but haven’t gotten around to it yet?

Love your post! I always use the term, “wearing all of those shoes!” Delegating is always one of my biggest challenges…striving to get better at that.

While one can’t delegate all of the duties of wife or mother (and who would want to really?) there are aspects that I’m happy to delegate…like housecleaning, laundry services, lawn people & errand services.
Not that I’m at the point of handing those jobs off quite yet. I just came home again this week, after all. They are in the plan though and as soon as income meets the expenses - those will be the first things off my plate.
With business related tasks…bookkeeping is the first to go, along with uploading (I’ve hired my eldest to do cut and pastes of articles and PLR for one of my hobby sites) and other niggly little things that I don’t necessarily have to do. Sometimes you have to break the jobs down into tasks in order to find opportunities to outsource.
