Welcome to the new and refreshed Work It, Mom!. If you're an existing member you'll notice that some things have changed but we hope it's all for the better.
As with all new things, we're bound to run into some issues but trust that we're working on them! We'd love to hear your feedback.

Mommy Needs a Business is all about the joys of running your own business. You never drafted a complete business plan, you couldn't be further from your law school degree and you are now referring to your 12 years of law enforcement as your "former life." But you get to screen print tee shirts in your pajamas while pulling your toddler and preschooler out of vats of ink. What more could a mom want?

Check out Kristen's blog, Mommy Needs a Cocktail.

Mompreneur? What the heck was I thinking?

Hi, my name is Kristen and I am losing my mind.

So there was this day, two years ago, when I came up with the great idea to sell t-shirts online and then I decided to screen print them myself in my basement because my mom and dad told me when I was little that I could be ANYTHING I wanted to be when I grew up. Except I didn’t live in a house with a big enough basement so I made my husband move to a bigger house. Then I realized that I really can’t screen print with two small children because I spent more time rubbing ink off the bottoms of their feet and out of their hair.

So then I went and found a babysitter, who graciously agreed to do all my laundry and clean my house AND watch my kids. Miraculously overnight I had an incredibly clean house and drawers full of clean clothes. But then I realized that my babysitter may have some legal issues that she was less than forthcoming about and now I’m back to having to watch a one year old and a three year old in the middle of a dirty house and I haven’t changed my clothes in three days. I have orders up to my eyeballs and The Boy woke me up three times last night for no apparent reason. No illness, no bed wetting, no nightmares. Just a little ‘WAH’ to make those middle of the night hours pass as if time is standing still.

How about those 4 years of law school at night after I finished my 10 hour days at work? I gave up a 12 year career in law enforcement for this? The life of a Mompreneur. Gotta love it.

On the bright side, I’m giving away an AWESOME Mommy Needs shirt (Cocktail? Glass of Wine? Chocolate? Latte? Vacation?) and a “My mom doesn’t want your advice” to two lucky commenters. Leave a comment and I’ll pick two random winners on Wednesday, May 28th, at around 9 a.m.

  • I think that everyone gets discouraged now and then. If being a mompreneur is your dream, then hold on to it.

Having child care DOES make a difference! (Besides, once you’re a big company that law school training will come in handy! ;-) )

  • Good Lord, I don’t know how you even have time to write this blog! Looking forward to reading it!

  • HELLOOOO. Welcome to your new blog space. I’m looking forward to hearing of your exploits! I toast you with my favorite drink: Delsina. This mompreneur always needs her tequila. And clean shirts because sometimes I spill. Maybe I need a Mommy Needs bib?

  • Kristen, so incredibly glad to see you here! Can’t wait to read all about your adventures in all things entrepreneurial!

    Kristin  |  May 25th, 2008 at 1:13 am

  • I’ll be buying some tshirts :) but just wanted to say how excited I am to have you join our blogging team — I think the way you fell into having your own business describes the experience so many of us had.

  • Your t-shirts sound adorable and Wow you sound busy!! Go girl!!

  • I have a one year old and a two year old and quit my tenured teaching job with no plan. Lots of ideas, but no plan. But, hey we’re still breathing and what’s life without a little risk and adventure. By the way, this mommy could use a tshirt for everyday of the week. Cheers!

  • Hi Kristen,
It’s brilliant that you are on this path.. Do checkout Cafepress.com if u haven’t already.. I don’t know abt ur cost structure/fixed with this home-printing equipment .. but sites like cafepress (there are some more) will offer several order fulfillment services incl. printing for t-shirt designers just like you.
    Best of luck,
    KG

  • Oh man I soooo need one of your t-shirts! I used to think my old 12-15-hour-a-day job was stressful but compared to this mommy stuff it was a walk in the park. It was a place where adult conversation, coffee breaks and lunch breaks were plentiful and I didn’t have to ask someone every 5 mins if they had to go potty. Remember when you actually took a shower EVERY day to go to work? Ha, oh the memories…

    Kim  |  May 26th, 2008 at 1:12 am

  • Hey Kristen, I can’t wait to read more! I have a toddler and a preschooler as well (also 1 and 3) and I can only imagine the chaos in your basement. ;) As for what Mommy needs, oh my. Chocolate, glass of wine, latte, vacation? How about all of the above?!

    Shannon  |  May 26th, 2008 at 12:55 pm

  • Thanks for the laughs today! I needed it, for sure!

    Jessica  |  May 26th, 2008 at 4:20 pm

  • Love it! I have a toddler and a new business…check out my site and my business called No Mommy’s Perfect! I have a medical degree and am working and doing all of this business stuff on my days “off” and at night…It is actually pretty exciting and hopefully will be helpful and fun for moms!!! I have learned a ton…would love to network.

    Susan  |  May 26th, 2008 at 7:24 pm

  • Wow, I’m still impressed that you took such a leap into entrepreneurship with two toddlers. I’ve been considering it, but I know that as long as I live in the area where I live, I have to keep my fulltime, out-of-the-house job — with the lousiest of hours.

I work nights and am a single mom of a gorgeous, energetic 3-year-old daughter who is testing, testing, testing me. But I still would love to come up with something to do that would allow me to spend more time with her and put her into a few programs to use all of that energy.

    I’ll be watching your blog.

  • LOVE your first post - looking forward to reading more. I’m contemplating taking the plunge into my own business - I keep telling myself how crazy I am. Maybe your posts will talk me into it! :)

    Gabrielle  |  May 27th, 2008 at 4:16 pm

  • Maybe I’ll win this give away. Being that it’s on my BIRTHDAY and all. Don’tcha’ think this mommy will need a cocktail tomorrow?!

    Karen  |  May 27th, 2008 at 7:50 pm

  • I’m so looking forward to reading more here! And I love your T-shirts. This mommy is having a cocktail RIGHT NOW…

    Lylah  |  May 27th, 2008 at 7:51 pm

  • I so know how you feel!! I own my own bookkeeping service and work from home most days. While my 7 and 4 year old are in school, I have my 10 month home with me on most days. I would love one of your shirts as I find myself thinking this on many nights after I finally get them all to bed. Thanks for all the laughs and I look forward to reading this blog as well.

    Amy  |  May 27th, 2008 at 8:06 pm

  • We spoke just after the “incident” with the gentleman that told you about what he thought Mommy really needs. I say it’s too bad that he didn’t stick around a bit longer so that all of the Mommy’s visiting your booth could speak with him… you know, one on one, to explain exactly why Mommy, and probably his girlfriend, needs a cocktail. Cheers to you my friend for keeping your cool that blazing hot Monday afternoon!!! And best wishes on this new, non-legal adventure. Law is so over rated!

  • I’m currently childless (four needy cats add up to like a third of a toddler, right?) but have high hopes of being a mommy and owning my own business someday. You’re an inspiration to us all. I look forward to reading about your future adventures.

    Kim  |  May 27th, 2008 at 8:52 pm

  • Shame the babysitter didn’t work out. Now that colleges are done for the season, maybe you could hire someone entirely too young and perky to play with the boys while you print? On the other hand, maybe you could pay the perky one to print while you play with your boys! Oh the possibilities.

    De in D.C.  |  May 27th, 2008 at 8:59 pm

  • Crud. Left a comment on the wrong post for free stuff. :)

Love your shirts!!! Crossing fingers for a win!

  • How about, Mommy Needs a Nap? You know, a less offensive but equally true version of much the same sentiment, which is, someone, please, can I escape for just a few minutes from being pulled like Elastigirl in eleventeen directions at once?

    Meg  |  May 27th, 2008 at 9:49 pm

  • Love your products. Love your quick comeback to the jerk from the craft fair even more! You go, mompreneur.

    Amy  |  May 27th, 2008 at 10:15 pm

  • Too cute! They just wanted to help mom. :)
You sound so brave and adventurous. I look forward to reading your blog. I really like your style. It makes me smile.

  • Your website makes me laugh and helps me survive my days with my 1 and 2 year old!!
    Thanks……

  • well, there’s nothing like giving up (er, putting on hold if my mom asks) my law school dream cause you may as well get pregnant right after you get married. when the subject of my babies being a scant 15 mos apart comes up, i always shrug and say, may as well get it over with. i’m amazed at how many people are slightly horrified by that statement. but really, i probably say, “aren’t you done being 2 yet?” to my son about seven times a day. and the little girl isn’t even one, so we are so far from having this toddler stage done with it’s not even funny.

and while a really don’t want any parenting advice, i really could use a few gardening tips because my green beans just aren’t sprouting!

    adrienne  |  May 27th, 2008 at 11:33 pm

  • You need a new magic house elf ;) If you find a group of them can you send one down to my house? We seem to be in need of magic cleaning. And childsitting.

Or husband sitting as the case may be.

  • So glad to “see” you over here ~ but I have no idea how you find the time! lol

LOVE the shirts ~ what a great idea. And the guy above? Needs to come out of the dark ages. UGH.

    Kim  |  May 28th, 2008 at 3:12 am

  • As a mother of five grown children, all I can say is believe it or not some day these days will be just memories in your mind. Then it seemed like I had too many kids, but now sometimes it seems not enough!Love your blog it always takes me back and brings a smile to my lips.

    Melissa Shouse  |  May 28th, 2008 at 4:29 am

  • What an ass. Next time you do a craft show, I’ll let you borrow my wonder woman boomerang. He won’t get very far…

    Kimberly  |  May 28th, 2008 at 5:21 am

  • Why I fell in love with you and your blog…
(ok…Kind of creepy, but so true!)

I was shopping in Target with my 3 kiddos ages 5, 3, 1, and the baby shrieked. A elderly woman who was pushing her walker turned to me and told me “you need to get that under control.”

I came home and saw you featured on Celebrity Baby Blog and saw your t-shirts that said “My mommy doesn’t need your advice.”

It was then I knew you had been sent from God!

    Lynette  |  May 28th, 2008 at 7:13 am

  • Oh and I forgot to tell you…Pregnant with #4!

    Lynette  |  May 28th, 2008 at 7:16 am

  • I love your Mommy Needs a Cocktail blog and I’m sure I’ll enjoy this one as well. Any chance you’re coming up to the Baltimore area any time soon? We have a street fair in Catonsville in September - I’ll buy you a cocktail if you come to it!

    Mar  |  May 28th, 2008 at 7:48 am

  • You can do it - my parents started their own business and it is still in full force nearly 30 years later! Good luck!

three time mommy  |  May 28th, 2008 at 7:55 am

  • I love the shirts, the blog, and reading about your adventures, because I know I am not alone OR crazy!

I think the people who don’t understand your shirts just don’t have 2 (or MORE!)kids under school age at home. Or they work (outside the home) while someone else is on kiddie insanity duty. Not saying working moms have it easier, just that they get to have adult interaction for a good part of the day!

This mommy isn’t too much of a drinker, but I’m sure always thinking about it! ;)

    Keep it up.

  • I LOVE THE COCKTAIL SHIRT!!! Anyone who doesn’t understand that one-doesn’t have kids or spends a lot of money on daycare and sitters. I think that the tees sound great and I wish I would have thought of them-you will push through this like you pushed through labor right!!

    Jill  |  May 28th, 2008 at 10:26 am

  • Maybe the dumbass will get it when he trips into fatherhood with an “Oh shit!”

  • What you said to the schmuck was perfect. I admire that you didn’t run him down and go ape-shit on his smarmy ass.
Did you give away the free stuff yet????

  • why the internet is a small small series of tubes:

my best friend happened to get another friend and i “my mom doesn’t want your advice” onesies for our sons (which is my favorite thing in the world, by the way…except for doughnuts. doughnuts trump everything at this point). one day the friend happened to dress her son in his onesie at an event with our local homebirth community, and our friend kindness girl happened to see it and mention that you were her sister. and then i realized i happened to have been reading your blog for some months now. at 5am with a 4 month old this seems like far more of a coincidence than it does upon reading it right now, i swear. i also think jfk’s assassination was a conspiracy by the muppets and the bloodhound gang from vinatge 321 contact, so what do i know. do really long comments get more than one chance at a tshirt or do they just get their shoelaces tied together for being that annoying girl?

    Synge  |  May 28th, 2008 at 5:13 pm

  • Congratulations on following your heart’s desire. It’s easy to work at a job where you get nothing out of it other than aggravation and a paycheck; it takes serious cajones to step off the path and do your own thang. I drove down to Clifton specifically to get one of your “Mommy Needs Some Chocolate” tshirts for my sister. We were heading to the Hotel Hershey for some well deserved chocolate related spa treatments. Well deserved for me cause I’m a SAHM with four kids still in the house (17, 7, and three year old twins - the 21 year old is in college); well deserved for her because she just finished radiation and chemotherapy (breast cancer at 38). Good luck with everything.

I have a subcategory for all of the Mommy Needs A blogs now. How cool is that?

Just remember all of the little people when you really go Hollywood :-)

  • Honey…you can still do anything!! I love you!

    YMGH  |  May 29th, 2008 at 9:22 pm

  • K, you said all the things I think and even while reading, it inspired me to give the work at home biz a shot!!! I can’t imagine it with two kids, because I only have one and I am freaking out. I know I can, but only because there are others out there like you that help people like me figure out how to quit their crappy regular job and move on to the next stage in their lives. I see that there is no perfect job, but that it is what you make of it. I need to get out there and have fun with my life cause the truth is, we can do anything we want - we just have to want to do it! Strength. you have it, and thank you for sharing it with us - even in your weaker cocktail needing moments. Cheers!

  • Please tell me you’re kidding. Okay, you’re not so THAT GUY SUCKS! What a truly clueless human. I so wish you would have run after him and strangled him with a MNAC T-shirt.

  • I have 3 kids: 6,5, and 3. I have also gone back to school to finish my degree. After my normal “Mommy duties”, cleaning up the house, and trying to study, your mommy needs a cocktail blog is a breath of fresh air! Even on days where it seems as if these kids came from Mars because they’ve bounced off the walls all day, I know that someone else is handling all this chaos too! Don’t get discouraged! You’ll come out of this with another great story! Keep up the great work! Thanks!

  • I am new to this site and have just re-entered the work force as a “mompreneur” myself. My kids are a bit older than yours - I have three boys, 9,8, and 5 - and I will tell you it does get easier as they get out of the toddler stage (and finally go to school)! It is a challenge to balance it all - and the with summer vacation starting today, I am a bit nervous as to how it will all get done.

My business partner and I started an on-line accessories boutique, flirtyfinds.com, catering to busy moms who want to look great but don’t want to spend the time or money on designer accessories or traveling to mass retailers and buying what everyone else has. We are always on the look out for up-and-coming designers and artisans, so if any of you ladies out there have product you’d like to pass on, please feel free to contact me. You can check out my site, http://www.flirtyfinds.com.

  • Dear K…if I may! Came across this blog and website today and I’m Luving It! T-Shirts look great! Would you give someone some brutal and honest feedback, a mom like yourself wearing many hats and wanting to pursue a law degree? Am I nuts for wanting to put myself thru those 3 years of law school? Yes, I’ve been wanting to do this forever………..
