Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at PhotobucketWomen voters are the key to winning the next presidential election.

Women with blogs reach a lot of other women.  No, most of us don’t have the Technorati rating of Arianna Huffington, but thousands upon thousands of women read and write blogs every day.  Not the yelling and screaming politico stuff, but a variety of thoughtful, funny and interesting accounts of what’s going on in our lives.  If we turned that into voter outreach, think about what we could do to change things in our country, regardless of where we fall on the blue-to-red political spectrum.

Apparently the candidates aren’t math geniuses or they would have figured out that reaching out to those of us who write (and read) blogs could help them out a bit in those battleground states.  That’s why I ‘heart’ Elizabeth Edwards.  She gets it.

She took time out of her already jam-packed schedule to meet with about 30 women bloggers in person and via conference call — from Silicon Valley Moms Blog, DC Metro Moms Blog and Chicago Moms Blog.  Edwards met with the SV Moms last year and so when she had a return visit this weekend to San Jose, she accepted their invitation for another meet-up with no questions off limits.

She covered as much as she could regarding the issues in the hour that she had for us.  But the reason I ‘heart’ her is that she, and hopefully the rest of at least the Edwards’ campaign, knows that when you put all of us women together we’re a force to be reckoned with.  I’d like to prove them right.

As she said yesterday, “We don’t get the change we want unless we fight for it.”

Anyone up for it?

Are any other candidates or their wives reaching out to women bloggers? Did you find her authentic when she talked? What are some key issues she is driving? (Sorry for all the questions, but I’m very curious…)

i agree with nataly - unfortunatly i am not as informed as i shoudl be! If the quote at the end of your article is true - why are there not more women candidates? why are we sitting here saying ‘yeah! listen to us!’ but none, other than Hillary, willing to run? kinda sad, dont you think?

I wish they were, but they don’t seem to be. I’m toying with the idea of reaching out to them to see if they would talk, but Elizabeth Edwards seems to be doing this on her own because she has found the online communities to be helpful and supportive of her in her personal life.

I sense that she is totally authentic. Maybe hard to believe, but I sense that she’s at a point in her life where she has decided she’s just going to say what she really believes, even if she doesn’t mirror her husband’s views all the time.

Key issues? Thought I’d write about that for my other post this week — but preventive health care and college for everyone are high on the priority list.

What issues do others think the candidates should be talking about that they aren’t?

  • Kate says:

might not be as important as some other national security type issues, but i dont think any of them are taking about issues around maternity leave - how to make it win-win for the employee AND the business.
