I think everyone in my office is or has been sick within the last couple weeks. Apparently use of disinfectant and hand sanitizer is a no-no in locker rooms male dominated work spaces.
I’ve been thinking about my upcoming leave of absence. Hard to believe since it is just a few days away, huh? Anyhoo. I’m wondering how much the locker room is going to miss my lavender scented desk wipes, fragrant lotions and disruptive uproarious bursts of laughter. Probably not as much as they will miss listening to me blow my nose and sneeze this week.
They’re a sentimental bunch.
Unless something comes up from last week’s blood draw I am done with pre-op appointments and will go directly to the scalpel on Friday morning. My to-do list at work is winding down but unfortunately, thanks to my head cold, so is my attention span. I had a helluva time being productive yesterday and that was before I came home and got a Robitusin buzz.
In the spirit of pimping information from my dear readers, I now present you 5 things I’m dying to know about your thoughts on health in the workplace:

1. only non-contagious ailments allowed! (allergies)
2-5. we only have ‘Paid Time Off’ (PTO) and it is left up to us if we want to use it for vacation, sick, mental health etc. plus i do have the flexibility to work from home if i wanted to avoid infecting others. it’s really pretty nice! that said, i like using my PTO for fun, so i dont get sick

We have paid time-off here too. We can use it however we want but just like Kate, I prefer VACATIONS over sick time.

What is an acceptable level of “sick” to bring to the workplace?
Slim to none. Allergies only, please. I have gone in with really bad sinus infections but usually leave after a couple of hours - after using the anti-germ wipes on everything I touch and taking the used ones home to dispose of.
Do you have the flexibility to work from home when you aren’t feeling 100%?
No, not yet. New contract coming up that should allow for telecommuting.
Do you take sick days for physical health only or do you take mental health breaks when you feel the need?
Physical health only. Others will take it for mental health mind you.
Does your office have any special policies on use of sick days (like you need to provide a doctor’s note if you are out more than two days in a row)?
Nope. Just phone your manager.
Do you feel like your company has allotted you enough sick time to cover your sick days and any sick days you may need to take to be with under-the-weather children?
I have so much sick time its not funny. I think I have somewhere around 170 hours banked. However, we can only use 2 days/year to care for a family member.
I also get a lot of banked time because I work late quite often and I can use that however I want.

I work at home on my own and only go in to the university twice a week. I miss work only when I have a fever or am really miserable. Once I was housebound for 6 weeks with a collapsed immune system, but did not have to miss any of my work. I sent my husband in to pick up and drop off things.
PS. Research shows that regular soap and water is jsut as effective in killing cold germs as anti-bacterial soaps, which actually are harmful because they kil lthe good bacteria, too.

Before I worked at home, if I was sick and could stand without throwing up or getting a migraine, I went. Working at home has been great…I don’t get sick as much! If I do, I still do some work because I love what I do, but I can rest inbetween.
HOPE YOU GET WELL SOON!!

Sick time is for being sick, but I’ve used it for health-related appointments, too. work at home? I can only wish. I’m a public school teacher: no flexibility. We’re driven by the bells.
