Today I had a completely random thought that went something like this:
How do I feel about religion in the workplace?
I quickly knew my answer:
If God can write clear documentation, elicit requirements, manage a work breakdown structure, make popcorn or fix the copier he is MORE than welcome in my workplace.
But in my opinion there is no other reason for God to be in the workplace.
CNN has an article called “When God goes to the office“. Go read it and come back. No really.
Go now.
I’ll wait.
OK. Here is what I think:
If it isn’t obvious, I am rather against religion in the workplace and I would quickly resign if I ever felt like the religion of company leaders was being forced (or strongly suggested) upon me.
Have you ever worked in an environment that incorporated religion into the workplace?
How do you feel about religion in the workplace? How much (or how little) could you/would you tolerate?
Do tell…

ooh i think the only time it’s appropriate is if you work for a particular religious or ‘faith based’ organization. otherwise… icky!
luckily i have not really ever worked in a situation like that. though once i did have a guy that worked FOR me that suddenly ‘found’ religion and started telling everyone ‘have a blessed day’ and ‘bless you’ (without any sneezing prior to) and it was actually offending people and we asked him to stop. Not sure if i would be offended, but i think neutrality is best in these situations!

What I do or don’t believe is private, I don’t talk about religion, my sex life or the state of my investment portfolio at work and I don’t want to hear about anyone else’s religion, sex life or investment portfolio either.
There is way too much over-disclosure in the workplace these days. Sure, be sociable, talk about your weekend, your family or your new car but really…some things just don’t belong at work. Religion is one of them….unless you’re a priest.
