In honor of Father’s Day this weekend, I thought I’d send out a mass THANK YOU to all of you moms, who actually enabled us Dads to celebrate Father’s Day (last I checked, we could not reproduce on our own).

Since my own wife has banned me from my buying gifts for her (since she said she received too many on Mother’s Day), I am hoping that this tribute to the women in our lives will make her smile.

But while I’ve got you here, I thought I’d opine on the state of the American dad as sparked by Lisa Belkin’s recent piece in the NY Times and our own WIM bloggers writing on the recent Dad survey

Okay, so I know we’re not perfect.

We (me) are too obsessed with sports (sue me, the Red Sox and Celtics haven’t been this good since I was NINE).

We don’t do enough around the house (psst, Nataly tells you how to make your hubby do MORE).

We don’t make enough money (some of us).

We don’t know how to dress our children properly (me).

And overall, we’re generally dirty and unmannered.

But 37% of us would stay home full time. HUH?!? I read that report and laughed. There is NO WAY that those 37% would stay home - WHY? Because it’s easier than going to work, or because they feel guilty because they work too much and don’t see their kids enough? I don’t see my daughter enough, but there is no way I’d become a SAHD. Part time? Maybe. But a SAHD - c’mon, any father who answered they’d want to do that has never spent a full sick day with his own child.

Now, onto Belkin’s piece, which speaks to the growing trend of SAHDs and what they do when they re-enter the workforce - her advice: keep one foot in the professional world, both for the future of your career as well as so you can have something to discuss with the neighbors at all of your get-togethers. Seems like sound advice, but overall, I think this trend will fade; the number of SAHDs is tiny - it may be growing, but it had to grow. I think it will rise a little more but will eventually plateau - The sad reality is that we cannot replace Mom.

And now that I’ve stepped down off my soapbox, Happy Father’s Day! (And please share your thoughts in the comments!)

ps: Go Celtics!

I’ve been meaning to comment on this but, well you know, I’ve been a little obsessed with my boys in green. So Happy Father’s Day to you and thanks for the kudos for us moms. I love the posts you write.

On your points, at least a couple, I have a lot of help around the house from my baby’s daddy and I’m the one who got him hooked on the Celtics.

And I’d type more but I’m still trying to recover from last night. I just really stopped in to say OMG!! Our team did it. Can you believe it? I want to know how you feel about your sports indulgence and what it means to your family.

I am still in shock, especially with the score of the last game and the dominance. Love it. I assume you’re at the parade today :)
And now we have to wait 5 more months until next season! (oh wait, there’s always the WNBA)

Men. Nope, you don’t do enough ’round the house and you can’t color coordinate when you dress the kiddo…but we love you guys anyway. :)

I didn’t go to the parade. If they had won in LA then I would have braved the crowd with two little kids but since I was there for the win (and have hundreds and hundreds of pictures) I opted to watch on TV. It’s almost a week later and it still hasn’t sunk in completely. WOWOWOWOWOWOW. Green is the new yellow and purple!

You were AT THE GAME?!?!?!? (I just threw myself onto the floor). Wow. Send pics :)
