No holiday spirit here

I had such great plans for getting into the holiday spirit, decorating the house, sending out cards, making presents.

And yes, you guessed it, not into it and haven't done most of that.

We did light Hanukkah candles every night, which was great, and we have one string of Hanukkah lights up, but that's about it. Oh, the cards I ordered from ofoto are sitting here, looking very pretty.

But no handmade presents and no time to make them. No house decorating. And no time or energy mostly for the holiday spirit.

I said to my husband that I think last year was easier when I had a "regular" job -- he then reminded me about how unhappy I was there. Yes, I said, but I found time to slack off and send out cards early!

I have being such a whiner -- but this week is seriously kicking my mental butt!

  • This is exactly why we have "Happy Holiday" cards... they can encompass a wider span of time!!

  • Haven't sent out any cards, managed to send only a couple last year. Dunno if/when I'll get my act together for cards this year. Hey, I like that New Year's cards idea!
I totally know where you're coming from. And I also totally agree with Kate: TY for the lovely present of this website, Nataly! - Paula.

  • Thanks, guys, feeling better. And since ours are holiday cards and we celebrate New Years, I figure if I get a bunch out this and next week we're in good shape.

And Brooke - I really like that idea!

  • most years people do not get holiday cards from us.. instead we send out cards in the middle of summer.... when everyone has more time... both for us sending.. and them getting... you are allowed to have human moments.

  • I am so bad. This year I didn't send out cards at all. Don't feel bad. It is not easy what you are doing and time is not usually on your side. Just plan ahead for next year. That is what I plan to do. This year has been rough on me, especially the last few months. Running a buisness is not easy and not for the weak hearted. I am actually selling my home to be able to have more cash flow and crunching down on other things. It does not feel much like Christmas this year but I am determined to make next year a great one!. Happy Holidays to you!

  • I just mailed my cards yesterday. Don't feel bad. It is a very hectic time of year. Sometimes I feel that it is too hectic to enjoy.

  • its not in the spirit of the holidays if you feel like you HAVE to do it! if you WANT to do it, then do it, otherwise don’t even worry about it! Give yourself permission to say ‘I am finished decorating now and can enjoy my holiday!’ because I have found a lot of times what hinders the enjoyment is all the ‘I still have to do… ‘ sentences floating in your head! Just stop and enjoy the lights for 10 minutes (ok maybe 5, I get wiggly after 5 minutes haha!)

and remember - you gave all of us here at WIM one fantabulistic gift by creating this awesome site

  • A friend of mine sends out New Year's/Epiphany cards just after Christmas, and I think that's a good idea. Things get so rushed that I think we've forgotten that the "Twelve Days of Christmas" START on Christmas Day, and we push ourselves way too hard to FINISH by then.

On a practical level, I'd probably accept that handmade gifts just won't happen this year, and let that go. Send out the cards in time for New Year's if you can. And I'd try to make a little time to do some decorating - seeing signs of the holidays in your home could help with the "spirit" thing.

  • I had always been that person who had handmade holiday cards out the day after Thanksgiving. Then babies happened. Last year, with a busy work schedule and two kids under 2, I sent them out as Valentine's Day cards instead. Same red color!!! This year I traced flippin' cookie cutters on cardstock, cut them out, and let the girls have a field day with crayons and markers. Wrote their names and date and age on them, punched holes and threaded some left over ribbon from other gifts. I made sure to take pics of the baby eating marker, though. DONE! It probably took less than an hour.

We do what we can when we can. There is a year out there with your name on it. It will be the year you get cards out (maybe with your grandkid's pics) before the New Year. It will be the year you make those cookies and cakes with your daughter (because she can read the recipes and will write out the grocery list). Your assistant (tee hee ha ha ha ha ha, I think I just peed a little) will make sure that all of your work is up to date so you can go to a spa and feel all accomplished and not like you have to kick your own ass.

This year is the year you pat yourself on the back, look at the membership here, read the remarks from those of us who are grateful to have this place to go, and write a note in your forever memory that you did this and it's made a difference in that strange way many of us are lucky to make a difference. You don't need to feel the holiday spirit for that.

Just hold your head up, shoulders back and walk around feeling pretty. It helps!

  • Nataly, Don't beat yourself up over this you've had your hands full recently. Your not alone in the no time boat believe me. You can always start a new tradition and send out "after" christmas card with a small note.
