The PTA is very active and naturally planned a family night at school.  But rather than being elected to volunteer, I offered to make a giant size child-friendly gift basket filled with all sorts of goodies.  I sold raffles at the door to the attendees.  From what I could tell the children were awe-struck by the gift basket.  The money collected was turned over to the PTA, the child who won was very happy and I was a hit sensation with my children's friends.
