Breaking routines

I admit it, I am a routine junkie -- I like having plans, routines make me feel calmer, etc.

But this morning I decided that all of us should break our usual routine. This has been a horrific week of everyone being sick and sleeping very little. The kiddo is feeling better, hubby is now sick, and so am I. So instead of taking our daughter to her ballet lesson, we lounged around for a few hours and are now going out for pancakes.

For some reason, breaking the routine feels really good this morning.

  • Oh my, looks like we've had similar weeks. My son came down with a very high fever on the 21st and then a cold and terrible cough. Then my husband got it, then me, and then my mum. I'm back at work this week but feel like I've been steamrolled! I do have a routine, but sticking to it is proving to be impossible. I think I'm going to strike work in the kitchen. My DH had better learn to start fending for himself, now that he's all better.

  • Don't you love it sometimes when the heart triumphs over the head, when that little logical voice your head says, "This isn't quite right" but the rest of you is saying, "But it feels gooood!"? Good for you, and here are some health vibes coming your way to you & hubby. - Paula.

  • That's great Nataly. Sorry your week was tough...

Honestly-our routines are part of what keeps me sane; however, when illness comes into play or we're deep into the Holidays-breaking the routines is probably best.

  • Good for you!

Routines are good because you can be on auto-pilot when you need to be and spontaneous when you want to be! But it was always be there for you to come back to. :)

Hope you and your hubby feel better! My son has strep throat -ugh!

  • It was really great -- the morning felt so much more relaxing and I think it's because we're used to it being much more structured. (Oh, and the pancakes were great!)

  • I love routines, and am forever trying to encourage the parents I work with to establish them with/for their children. A routine that doesn't allow you to take time to recover from stress and illness isn't a healthy thing -- then it becomes a burden rather than the support it should be. Sounds like you made a very healthy decision this morning.

  • That break in routine is allowing you freedom to recover and just chill. The nicest thing about routines for me is how great it feels to deviate from it.

  • Sometimes breaking routines can be the best thing to do. It helps us all feel better even when we are sick if we take the time for ourselves.
