Scarlett O'Hara where are you????
Posted 1st June 2008 by Terri
Ok so I am sitting one evening on my back porch fretting as
I do so often about the state of my finances.
I must stop reading the newspaper articles about the recent foreclosure crisis. I wonder how far off I am from foreclosure on my home in my dream
neighborhood. I really do live in a
Mayberry type neighborhood. Then the
next thought is maybe welfare and food stamps are next. Yikes!!!
How does a person with MBA and years of experience in the corporate
world get to this place?
When suddenly I hear my deceased mother and grandmother both
say at the same time “Over my dead body will any daughter /granddaughter of
mine lose her home and go on welfare and food stamps.” OK so I am thinking a
bit ironic since they are both dead but the point is still not lost on me. I reply “But Mom, Grandma times are hard
things have changed since you were here last.”
“Ha” they both say “we survived the depression and you will survive this.”
OK at this point I realize I have had two glasses of wine
and probably should go to bed. Mom and
Grandma both agree with me. It is at
that point they tell me “Good night we will see you in your dreams and kiss my
forehead.” Then I imagine they go back
to a lively debate of some sort probably over why my brothers in NJ haven’t
called in awhile.
The next morning I wake up with my two children curled up next to me. Sometime during the night they had gotten in
my bed. I love those mornings feeling
their soft skin and warm cuddly bodies curled up next to me. So it is at that point Scarlet O’Hara comes
to my mind and I feel a surge of her resolve and the moment she declares. “God as my witness I will never eat turnips
again!” Ok so that isn’t even close to
the actual lines in the movie. But hey I haven’t had any coffee yet. The real
quote is Vivien Leigh (Scarlett): As God is my witness, as God is my witness
they’re not going to lick me! I’m going to live through this and when it’s all
over, I’ll never be hungry again! No, nor any of my folk. If I have to lie,
steal, cheat or kill! As God is my witness, I’ll never be hungry again!
Vivien Leigh as Scarlett O’hara
(Gone with the Wind)
OK so maybe I won’t lie, steal,
cheat or kill but I am going to find a way out of this mess.
“God as my witness I am never going
to be this broke again. I’m going to
live through this and when it’s all over,
I am going to stop drinking wine.”
