The coming sick day...

Ever since my daughter has started daycare I wait every day for her to come home sick or wake up with a cold. I know it's a way for their immune system to get stronger, but it doesn't make the juggle of sick days any easier. And this morning I heard her cough in her room...

She didn't have a fever and was acting fine, so she is in school right now, but I've got my cell phone right by my side waiting for THE call. And I've got a list of my afternoon calls here in case I have to move them.

I hate when she is sick - she is miserable, I feel bad for her, and whatever semblance of schedule we have goes right out the window (and leaves me working til 3am:)

I hope I don't get the call today...

  • I'm really lucky in that my babysitter only takes care of one other child in addition to mine. Fortunately they don't get sick too often even though I am a teacher and probably bring tons of germs home!

  • OliverMartini - I am so glad you wrote this - because I was a wuss and didn't. The first feeling I had when I realized my daughter might be sick was Oh, crap! I have all this work to do! And then immediately I felt SO guilty for worrying about work when she is sick....

  • Sick child is the WORST!! A whirling sandstorm of guilt and worry starts with that first symptom..mommy guilt, working girl guilt..and it piles up, sifts into all the cracks, and engulfs everything in it's path. And, throughout, the 'if only's' and 'what if's
echo in your head. I've had the call twice this week from school. Luckily, this week, it seems only back to school tiredness and blues-(and that's a whole 'nother wave of guilt). My poor, tough little guy! It's not easy to play Candyland, fetch popsicles, and cram in work during naps or movies. I always ask myself what could I do differently??

  • I too know what you both mean. Benjamin is now a year but last December when I returned to work and I put him in daycare he instantly came down with a cough and that was just the beginning. My husband and I spent Christmas day hovered over the toilet and couldn't believe that such a little being could bring us that much misery!! Honestly, it was one thing after another. I can't even tell you how many times I was on the phone with the Drs office at 3:00am. On top of that was the pressure of just returning to work, having only a couple of sick days in the bank and slightly more vacation time. The stress was enormous. But, I love my daycare (it's in my building), my boss has children as do most of my colleagues, and the pediatrician is a 15 minute walk from here. So, I guess it could be worse. Now, I am bracing myself for this winter and can only imagine what's in store!!! Hang in there-- and don't beat yourself up- it can't be helped and you are truly doing the best job you can- that's what I keep telling myself!

  • Thanks, hula mom - I went to school early and picked her up so she can nap at home (she does not nap there) - she has a runny nose, no fever yet

Great idea for chicken soup - I think I have some frozen chicken legs I'll go defrost now..
