When weekends feel like weekdays...

I hate when Monday comes and I don't feel rested from the weekend... probably because I always pack too much into the weekend, including catching up on hours of work. I know I should learn my lesson, but I also think this is one of the costs of working a flexible-type schedule - because I see my daughter more during the weekday, I end up doing work at night and on weekends. Not sure what the solution might be.

(My mom said maybe I should go back to my "regular job" as she calls it - she means my evil finance job I had before I started Work It, Mom! - because that way I stress less, work less, and make more money. I know she means well - she is worried, this whole start-up world is completely unfamiliar to her - but sometimes it just ads to the stress...)

  • I am finding that creating and maintaining a rhythm is really important when you work from home and the schedule is flexible. I'm still working on this, and I like the idea of writing everything down to help get organized. I think it's important though to ALLOW ourselves some flexibility with this, and not to be too disappointed when expectations aren't met.

  • I'm in the same boat. This weekend was a great example. Hubby and I help to put on the Boston Blues Festival so we dragged the kids out for 2 fulls days of music and stress and when I got home last night I still had voice work to do. I got that part done but there is a lot more to do today and no chance b/c the girls want some mommy time after a weekend of being passed around. Weekends are always when I try to play catch up but I've got to try and coordinate with hubby who needs to do the same and in the end one of us always gets the short end. We're getting there but it's slooowww. Monday is not a good day to play catch up, for sure.

  • You know what? I used to be a stickler for putting things on paper - and then it just all got crazy and chaotic. But I think your suggestion is right on - I do feel more organized in my mind when I do this and it should reduce the stress. So going to give it a try!

  • I have a possible solution, that almost worked for me. We'll get into the almost later.
If you don't do this already, try actually putting a schedule down on paper and spreading your activities out between your Work It, Mom! stuff and your personal stuff. When you have things on paper, you tend to stick to it a little more ridgedly.
Now here's the trick. Keep track of how long these things actually take to do, it will help you work out the kinks of your schedule as you go.
    Hence... reducing stress! Maybe.

Ok.. my almost story. I started doing this and it honestly did really help out, I'm talking TONS. But then I would get so stressed about doing my weekly schedule and all the tid-bits of information that I never got the kinks worked out and I just went back to my normal routine.

I'm just a creature of habit.

    Good luck to you!!

  • Marcia - oh, how exciting! I hope you'll be posting about your progress here at Work It, Mom! - lots of moms here have small businesses or are thinking of starting one.

  • I know how you feel after the weekend I had. A friend of mine is getting her Masters in Business Administration and her and I are going to try to start something as well. I know we might not be successful or at least not at first. We plan to start small and see how things go. We really hope to be able to support ourselves and families after we get things rolling. I guess we will have to wait and see how it goes! We're in the research stage, outlining our business plans and checking to see if we would infact profit or not. We won't just jump in without knowing the ins and outs.

  • You're so right, Kate - this is the good stress, as I keep reminding myself:)

  • ooh mama means well but when she starts just say shhhhh! and remember that even though this is more 'stressful' it's also sooo sooo sooooooooo much more soul satisfying! it's a different kind of stress and not nearly as damaging!
