Find a Recession Proof Profession

Only a few weeks ago, USA today published an article entitled "Direct sales (like Avon, Mary Kay) offer recession-proof jobs - USATODAY.com". It served as an affirmation that I was investing my time wisely in an appropriate business proposition. Additionally, it served up a bit of guilt, as I feel like I am so overly compensated, in a secure position, for doing very little from my own home. However, with the unemployment rate skyrocketing, I feel compelled to blog about the many "unconventional" business opportunities that currently exsist - just waiting for a skilled business professional to give up the 9-5 grind, and apply their business skills in a whole new way.
My story began 16 months ago, when I joined a Direct Sales company called Scentsy (www.safecandle.net). I was hesitant, as I just incorporated my own Interior Decorating Business, and resigned myself to a committment of balancing working from home with motherhood (as I was not planning on using childcare). There was something about the Scentsy business opportunity that seemed to just "call" me, so I reluctantly and sceptically decided to buy a starter kit for $99, and give it a shot, while balancing a new business and mommyhood.
NEVER one to consider myself a "home party girl", I decided that I must take a different angle on this new business, in order to best exercise my previous corporate business skills. If I was going to make this happen, I was going to have fun doing it! Much to my advantage, I was embedded in the Heart of Illinois, being one of only a few who were taking the challenge of selling the Scentsy Products. I choose to spread the word the best way that I new how, and that was to expose the product to the business professionals in the area that I knew best. It turned out to be a perfect blend with my Interior Decorating Business, as I ended up selling beautiful pottery and fabulously scented wax to Realtors, Builders, Dentist Offices, Doctors, Daycares, Schools, and many other referals that had come from my Interior Decorating contacts.
Sixteen months later, I have become a full time Director for Scentsy, and I have climbed my way to the top - with the highest Title possible in the company. I developed a current team of over 400 Scentsy Consultants. I chose to drop my demanding Interior Decorating profession, to help mentor and train up women (and a few men) from all walks of life who were looking for "something different". I learned to get to know these ambitious women and men for what they wanted out of their business, and helped them to work their Scentsy business from an angle that was most appropriate for them. Believe it or not, I found myself mentoring and hanging with "home party girls"!
