A Parenting Success

We all struggle to try to do our best as parents; often we feel as if we fall short. This is certainly true for my family as my husband and I both juggled graduate school, job searching and family time. Some days we did better than others. Recently I've been able to witness some successes with our daughter and it is a great feeling.
One of the things we have tried to focus on is a healthy lifestyle, not unlike most families. This has been a challenge as we worked strange hours with a long commute, but we did our best. Now I watch my daughter as she chooses the apples out of the refrigerator. She chooses grapes and nectarines over many other foods. Yesterday she actually requested green beans at the grocery store and actually started eating them from the bag. She is also very active and enjoys being outside. She also gets excited to go hiking with us and has to walk it all herself. This is something we enjoy but haven't done much of lately.
Don't get me wrong, she is a normal kid. She loves cheese in almost any form and like sugar. We have had a fight over gummi bears recently. TV is a favorite activity when we allow it. But given the choice of foods she will often pick the healthier option. We aren't perfect parents when it comes to food and activity, but we try. Apparently it has been working. I just hope we can continue to promote this and continue to keep her active.

I wonder if it is partially her own genetic makeup though. My sister was much the same way, shunning sweets for protein and choosing tortillas over wonder bread. Me, I have a sweet tooth. And it is constantly yelling at me about the lack of sweets!
