The Birth of Mom on Reserve

When I first joined Work it Mom!, I did so hoping to be inspired to do something a little bit different - perhaps to find some creative spark again. Lylah M. Alphonse proved to be the spark that I needed when she posted a piece on military deployments (read it here) over at her blog, Write.Edit.Repeat.

In a nutshell, she helped me think of - and view - my own role as a working, breadwinning mother, differently. On top of defining my motherhood role as the non-primary care-giver to our daughter, I also realized that I am a birth mother to an amazing young man, a man whose life I am on the fringes of (when he needs me - but I am not a substitute for his adoptive mother who is truly his mom) and indeed, I am also a military reservist.

All of these factors combine to make me a Mother in Reserve, a Mom on Reserve. So, from that perspective, I started my own blog, Mom on Reserve. I don't know where it will go, what it will do or if it will ever even be a blip on the radar of the Mommy Blogosphere, but I hope that it will touch somebody's life - either with humor or compassion or both.

I don't know what it will mean for my future as a member on Work it Mom! either. Maybe cross posting (I've already done that to get Mom on Reserve started), maybe just lurking from here on in...but if it weren't for this site and for the interactions I've had with some members already, I may not have been inspired at all. So, check it out if you like...and thank you, Work it Mom!, for living up to my expectations and then some.

  • I'm honored, Phe! I love how you've defined your motherhood role, and I think many women can relate to the different facets you mention -- if not all at the same time, then definitely piece by piece. I'm looking forward to reading your posts at Mom on Reserve!
