  • Have any of you heard of this online book group? You fill your virtual shelves with the books you've read. You can write review of them, you can put tags on them, you can communicate with other members and join groups. Anyone interested in forming a Work It, Mom! group over there?

  • I am interested. I will have to try to get over to the site sometime this evening after work and look at it but it sounds good.

  • A good friend recommended goodreads.com to me. She's my go to for book recommendations. The functionality sounds similiar. I haven't spent alot of time there, but there are a number of very lively discussions!

  • I like the idea of the book group, and I actually think I registered on Shelfari at some point. But I just don't know where I'd find the time to get my bookshelves set up! I've got lots of books registered on BookCrossing already - it doesn't really have the functionality of these newer sites, but I'm not sure I have the energy to move them elsewhere! I'm not sure where I'd start. And I'm already writing book reviews on my blog anyway - I guess I could link to those (?) rather than write them twice.

I think I'd be up for it, but I'm not sure when.

  • I've explored it a bit more, and I'm having two problems with it:

    1. It is SLOW. It can take 15 - 25 seconds for the tags you've chosen to be loaded. That's a lot of time when you're wanting to process twenty or thirty books at once.

    2. Its functions are not easy to find. I had to ask to find out how to post notes to someone, and I still don't know what the difference is between Opinions and Notes on a book, nor how to publish either!

  • My New Year's week project was getting my books cataloged online. I couldn't decide where I wanted to set them up, and in the end, I doubled up - I have libraries on both GoodReads and LibraryThing now. (Shelfari didn't make the cut.) I also have all of my basic book info (ISBN, author, title) in an Excel spreadsheet, since both sites will allow you to import book data that way and it's much faster than entering books one at a time!

I'm going to keep the dual system going for awhile till I decide which I prefer, but right now I suspect that LibraryThing will win out in the long run.

If you have a library account on either or both of these sites, please let me know or look me up so we can connect!
