CEOs staying rich after bottoming out?

  Okay, I fully admit that I don't understand how wall street works, but this has me baffled. Why do companies' leading executives get huge severance packages when everyone else gets nothing as these giants are going under? I saw a debate about it on the Today show this morning and have to admit that I still can't see the other side of the argument. Does anyone get it?
