According to this article, there is increasing evidence that some employers are using the dismal economic situation as an excuse to lay off expecting moms -- and there is no law against this, as long as they don't fire a pregnant woman just because she is pregnant.

I was let go December 2007, 11 days before Christmas, while 26 weeks pregnant. The guy actually told me that they were letting me go because I was pregnant and can't work the hours required. But because it was a tiny company and they could just file for bankruptcy, I'd never get anything out of them and it would have put me more into debt. So I couldn't do anything. =( I couldn't even collect unemployment from them since I was considered a 1099 employee and they never put money into unemployment.
