According to an upcoming Census Bureau report, most working moms return to work a year after having a child. The opt-out revolution, it seems, is just a myth.

Women at highest income levels (above $200k) or whose husbands have high incomes, are a bit more likely to opt-out and stay at home full-time -- they can afford it -- as well as women with incomes below $50k -- who find that they can't pay for adequate daycare if they have to work.

  • Exactly. When you have one kid, decent daycare costs half your paycheck, and when you have 2 or more, kiss your paycheck goodbye.
