A fascinating story in the New York Times about how different agencies and non-profits are helping moms who are in very difficult situations -- i.e. leaving a violent relationship. In one instance there are volunteer families that take the kids for a few weeks until the mom can get back on her feet -- not as foster parents, but just as temporary helpers.
