I know a bunch of you have had this happen: been offered a promotion and wanted to turn it down because of how stressful your home life is. Anybody been told you cannot turn down the promotion? How did you deal with that? I love my job, but it just isn't the right time for me to move up.”

Wow... my first thought is to listen to your gut! I have turned down a supervisory position due to putting my family first and I know I made the right decision at the time. I like Beaniemommie's response - I would take it a step further and go to your Employment Counseling which is confidential and can help you sort through pros and cons and options. Also, taking the promotion is already decided for you, while looking for work elsewhere, keeps your options open.

I just resigned from a job despite the fact my family depends on my income - I asked my husband if he wants money or his wife back? Only you can decide what's best for you and your family. Good luck.

Wow, I don't know how I would deal with that. I'm considering requesting that I be demoted due to my current pregnancy because I know I won't be able to deal with my job (and travel) with a newborn. Depending on how happy I was with my job, I would consider looking for something new, but taking the promotion (since you have to) for the time being. Also consider giving them realistic expectations from you. What you're willing to do and what you're not willing to do.

It is part of a "career ladder" policy that my company has. I asked my manager and then asked HR for guidance and was told that I couldn't refuse the promotion.
