We do it in stages.
June: buy the stationery stuff - paper, pens, binders, glue, scissors... (Which are then hidden in a closet and NO they may not use them before school starts, which is September in these parts.)
July: the accessories - backpack, rent the instrument, sports equipment, whatever
August: the back-to-school outfit and shoes
Spreading it out makes it more like fun and less like an ordeal. And a lot easier on the bank balance. Course, that doesn't help the rest of you for THIS year... Sorry!
