O'kay, I have gotten my web page up and running on the internet. Does anyone know what is the best way to get traffic to my site? By this I mean, what makes some pages pop up at the top of a search page?”

Start by promoting (or announcing) your site to your existing clients, friends, family, former colleagues etc. You will want to indicate the primary purpose and intended audience for your site and ask that they forward the information to others that may be interested in your business. Also, make sure that you're advertising your site on your business correspondence documents (letterhead, email signature, business cards, brochures etc.).

Then, you will need to ensure that your site is optimized for search engine placement and ensure that you've registered with the major search engines.

This is a start, there are many options and tools for promoting your site. However, depending on your industry and target keywords, it can take a while to gain top placement. You can mix in a paid search engine placement strategy if you'd like to drive more traffic to your site sooner.

If you can write articles, I find that writing an article regularly and submitting it to article directories works for me. It's a slow and steady process to get started, but has a snowball effect if you keep at it. It's easy to write about things you know alot about. Go to Google.com and type in "article submission directory" to find a bunch of places to submit your articles to, or use SubmitYOURArticle.com which will submit your article to many places at once automatically.

Add a bio at the end of your article that points to your website. If they like your article, they may cllick on your website.

Before you decide on your strategy you may want to read up on the topic. Tons of information out there, it can make your head spin.
There are so many books written on the subject. I like "101 Ways to Promote Your Web Site" by Susan Sweeney. You can find it on Amazon.
I also like Donna Gunter's work. You can sign up for her free weekly ezine and receive her Online Marketing Toolkit for free. You can find her at www.donnagunter.com.

I've had a lot of traffic from Stumble upon.com Doesn't cost anything and it's easy. Just remember, it takes time. Also, getting others to write about something you have on your site or blogrolls are helpful.

One of the best ways to drive early traffic is to get other blogs/sites to link to you. So perhaps you can find some blogs/sites that are related to yours and address a common audience and partner with them to cross-promote?
