You usually think Panera is a healthier, inexpensive alternative to traditional fast food, but those broccoli cheddar bread bowls do add up! Save $10 and make your next panini at home. Panera’s steak and white cheddar option is high in calories, but swapping out the cheddar with one more low-fat and cutting back on the meat can make a big difference.

Serves: 6 / Prep Time: 35 mins. / Cook Time: 10 mins

1 1/2 lb. steak

12 slices bread

1/4 C. lime juice

1 T. extra virgin olive oil

2 large onions

12 slices white cheddar cheese

Horseradish sauce

Put steak into a large sealable plastic bag. Add the oil, lime juice, salt and pepper and shake the bag until evenly coated. Refrigerate for 30 minutes. In a large skillet sauté the contents of the bag until meat is cooked to your preference. Remove the steak and set aside. Cut onions into 1/2 inch slices and add to the skillet. Cook until soft. Cut the steak into thin slices for sandwiches. Assemble the panini with steak, onions, and cheese. Toast with panini press, grill, or oven.
