Kids off to camp? Here's what they should pack

The amount of stuff a child needs to bring to overnight camp can seem overwhelming. Here's a handy guide to what they should bring. (Day campers need far less gear; scroll to a bottom for that checklist.) Be sure to check with the camp about whether electronics, toys, snacks, and sports equipment are allowed, and make sure all of your child's belongings are clearly labeled.

Basic Clothing
  • T-shirts and tank tops
  • Shorts
  • Long pants
  • Long-sleeve T-shirt
  • Light jacket/windbreaker
  • Swim suit
  • Pajamas
  • Robe
  • Underwear
  • Socks
  • One nice outfit (shorts and polo shirt for boys, sundress for girls)
  • Hiking boots
  • Sneakers
  • Flip-flops (for the bathroom and for the beach)
  • Sandals
  • Dress shoes (to go with the one nice outfit)

Bed and Bath
  • Towels (for bathing and for swimming)
  • Light blanket
  • Pillow
  • Pillow case
  • Sheets
  • Sleeping bag
  • Laundry bag

  • Brush and/or comb
  • Hair elastics/headbands, if used
  • Shampoo and conditioner
  • Soap (and a container to put it in)
  • Tooth brush (and a container to put it in)
  • Toothpaste
  • Deodorant
  • Feminine products
  • Shaving gear
  • Small first aid kit
  • Lotion (for dry skin or soothing sunburns)

Other essentials
  • Sunscreen
  • Insect repellent
  • Lip balm with sunscreen

  • Books/magazines
  • Summer homework or reading
